another poignant remembrances. students placed over 2000 u.s. flags, each representing a person killed during the attack nine years ago. it just another reminder that we will never forget it as a country. john gonzalez, abc 7 news. along with a remembrance, today is also a national day of service. president obama rolled up his sleeves and helped paint walls at the john brown middle school in northeast. the president also took time out to talk to volunteers. first lady michelle obama also picked up a paint brush, joining 100 other volunteers to paint the vincent hall retirement center in mclean, va., a retirement home for military veterans. it was not a quiet day of reflection for everyone. there was a major protest and

at a child alerted any. two people inside of the home were injured in ellicott city. the victims have not yet been identified. students at one george washington university dormitory had to evacuate because of smoke. it happened after 9:00 p.m. no word on what caused it, but it is believed to have come from a machine room. students have been allowed back in. the police are searching for a suspect who escaped from police custody in baltimore. he is considered dangerous. paul palmer broke free after faking a medical emergency. he is believed to be heading toward the district or west virginia with a female companion in a kia spectra with maryland tags 1ew-b10. together again, sarah palin and glenn beck are teaming up

the american hiker who was supposed to be released today remains in an iranian jail. i experts say it may indicate there is a power struggle on the country. the 31-rolled woman was not released. the country's chief prosecutor overruled home, sang the legal process has not been completed. no word on how long that will take. she was arrested along with two other american hikers. a man upset with his wife went on a shooting rampage in eastern kentucky. the police say he killed his wife, stepdaughter, and three witnesses before killing himself. it happened at a mobile home

park near the city of jackson. relatives say he has had a history of violence, but the police could not confirm if he had a criminal record. five people remain missing after the deadly gas pipeline explosion in california that killed at least four people. >> at a packed town hall meeting inside of a church, officials tried to console and inform the homeless victims of the massive and deadly gas explosion. >> there are reports circulating that there may be additional fatalities. what we can tell you at this time is that that search and investigation process is continuing. >> they are still trying to determine what caused the blast. >> we don't know what made that pipeline rupture. >> what about the safety of similar gas lines that crisscross america? >> some of this pipe was laid in

citizens. >> president obama has called on americans to use this day as a day of service, joining people at a community project at a local middle school. perhaps the most vivid reminder of the day was at ground zero in new york, where relatives or read the names of those killed when the world trade center went down. along with the remembrance, today is also a national day of service. after speaking at the pentagon, president obama rolled up his sleeves and helped paint the walls at a middle school in washington. he also spoke with volunteers who are making quilts. brewing controversy in one maryland suburb over a speed camera. some say the speed camera along indian head highway is making miscalculations. julie parker explains.

>> some say these cameras are committing indian head highway robbery. this former police officer said the speed cameras that he got this summer are bogus. >> i said, no, they didn't. impossible. >> each time, he said based on where he entered indian head highway, he could not have reached the speed that the tickets states. he said it was not enough time for his 40,000 pound rv with a car in tote to hit 53 miles per hour after leaving a side street and lumbering uphill alongside the camera. >> there is no way i can get up to 25 m.p.h. haveis man's drivers gotten so many tickets, he has dubbed it the toll plaza. >> we have had probably 18 tickets this summer and our drivers are responsible for that. they have not done anything

wrong. >> state highway officials say they are within the mandatory 1 mile radius of a school. the police chief says they are needed for safety because drivers easily double the 35 mile per hour speed limit here. drivers we spoke with disagree. >> sounds like they need some fast cash. it sounds very fishy. he the driver of the rv says wants to go to court to fight the tickets but does not have a court date so far. the national mall now has free wi-fi. d.c. has added 220 wi-fi hotspots that cover the mall from three -- third street. they get help from the department of agriculture and the smithsonian. you may see more biking commuters. the department of transportation and arlington county are partnering up for a bike share system to be the largest in the country.
